Toyota and Scania are joining forces to test and develop hydrogen fuel cell technology for heavy-duty transportation. The partnership aims to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission vehicles in Europe’s logistics sector. This collaboration is particularly significant as it addresses the growing need for sustainable solutions in an industry traditionally reliant on fossil fuels.

Toyota will supply its latest fuel cell systems to be integrated into 40 Scania heavy-duty vehicles. These trucks will be part of Scania’s Pilot Partner program, a collaborative initiative involving select logistics customers to test technologies in real-world operations. The program ensures that the technology is not only theoretically viable but also practical and reliable under diverse operational conditions.

Toyota’s third-generation fuel cell system can generate up to 300 kW of power. Its compact yet powerful design is well-suited for heavy-duty transport, offering long range, high operational efficiency, and fast refueling times. This system is a result of years of research and development, building on Toyota’s expertise in fuel cell technology, which has been applied in smaller vehicles like the Mirai sedan.

The hydrogen-based electric trucks are scheduled to begin operations in the first quarter of 2027. Through extensive testing, Toyota and Scania aim to gather data on technical reliability, energy efficiency, and total cost of ownership. This data will be key for refining the technology and making it more accessible and cost-effective for widespread adoption.

Hiroki Nakajima, Executive Vice President of Toyota Motor Corporation, emphasized that heavy-duty commercial vehicles are key to driving hydrogen demand and expanding refueling infrastructure in Europe. He stated that hydrogen is the ideal solution for long-haul, high-utility transportation. Nakajima highlighted that the success of this initiative could catalyze the development of a full hydrogen ecosystem, benefiting not just the transportation sector but also other industries.

Scania’s Chief Technology Officer, Sara Forsberg, welcomed the collaboration, noting that real-world testing with logistics customers will provide valuable insights into the opportunities and technical challenges of fuel cell technology in heavy-duty operations. Forsberg added that the partnership aligns with Scania’s broader sustainability goals, which include reducing carbon emissions and promoting cleaner transportation solutions.

This proactive step by Toyota and Scania lays a critical foundation for the future transformation of the heavy-duty transportation industry toward environmentally friendly solutions. By combining Toyota’s advanced fuel cell technology with Scania’s expertise in heavy-duty vehicles, the partnership is poised to make significant strides in making hydrogen-powered transportation a viable and sustainable option for the future.
